Sorry about the break between blogs, I've been pretty busy lately working on a couple new projects. I am in the process of launching a new start-up business (poker related) of course, and I also recently acquired another business to add to my growing portfolio of websites, internet businesses, ect. Sometimes I wonder how I even have time to sleep. Oh wait, I don't really sleep that much. Speaking of which, it's somewhat funny the hours that most poker players or promoters hold. A good friend of mine Bryan Micon who runs NeverWinPoker.com calls them "degenerate hours". Man, he is so right :)
I could sit on this computer all afternoon sending emails waiting to hear back from folks and 9 times out of 10 when I hear that little chime from outlook it is a Nigerian business man telling me needs help transferring $10 million USD, or someone offering a remedy to make my penis 8 inches longer.......Ummmm no thanks on both, although the second offer does sound intriguing. However if I'm online between the hours of midnight and 3 A.M. it seems my inbox is blowing up, and heaven forbid I open up messenger. I suppose that's just how we roll in the online poker world.
Quite honestly I can't get much done during the day with a 2 year old and a wife at home anyways. The only time I normally work during the daytime hours is when my daughter and wife take a nap. Besides, my family is far more important to me than this stupid laptop. As soon as the house is asleep though I can get twice as much done in a peaceful and quiet environment. Here's a "Jeremy Random Thought of The Day"........I only thought of this after writing the last sentence. At the end of the year if I looked at how much money was sent and received from this laptop I could probably be classified as a small bank somewhere. Between playing online and promoting the amount has got to be ridiculous.
Now, your probably wondering about the title of the blog. can I get a quick Hell Ya! Last Friday night I decided to play in the $150 Multi-Table at The Local Charity Poker Night. I ended up chopping it at the end with one guy whose chip stack was equal to mine.
So here's how it all went down. All day Friday I was contemplating playing in the event that evening, but it was like six sense or something, I knew I was going to win it. As I mentioned earlier I am in the process of acquiring a new business and all day I thought, man if I could win tonight that would justify the acquisition of the new business to my wife :).........Needless to say I was focused.
Here's my new lucky poker shirt that I had on that night.........Fresh out of the bag from the Target superstore!

It got quite a laugh from everyone at the table. Anyhow, here's how it started, there were 48 players total and we all started with $3K in chips. The blinds started at $25-$50 and were being raised every 12-15 minutes. I played tighter than a nuns &%#$@^ for the first few rounds. In fact I only played a few hands in the first hour, and each time it was folded to me on the flop. Towards the end of the $50 -$100 round I made a move with trips and was able to build my stack to around $6000. There I was, sitting, sitting, and sitting. Finally before my BB at 100-200 I was moved to another table. I was kinda pissed as I had everyone's play pegged on the old table.
The first hand I was dealt in the BB I caught AKc.......sure enough it folded all the way around to the bald guy on my right who decided to move all-in. The guy had about $4000, so I figured I had him covered and had feeling he had A/something and was trying to pick up my blind as I saw him push earlier with garbage trying to steal. Also my table image was pretty tight so he figured it would be a pretty easy steal. I thought about it for a second and called. To make a long story short he had KQ caught a Q on the flop to end up winning the hand.
I was a but crippled at this point and continued to fold almost everything. In the midst of my garbage cards the blinds had climbed to $500-$1000. At this point with about $1700 in my stack it was go time. Finally I caught TT and pushed.........no respect, I got two callers. I caught a 10 on the turn and tripled up. I then had a good run and won a few other smaller pots and next thing you know I was sitting on about $18K.
Then I caught JT os in the BB with blinds at $1500/$3000. I knew a couple of the guys at the other corner of the table and I knew they were a little flustered about my comeback. Anyhow a friend of mine Jim Elsworth, who is a really good card player made it $6K to go. Everyone folded to me and I called, the flop came rag, rag, J. I felt pretty good at this point that I had the best hand. Jim thought about it for a second and bet out another $6K. With only about $10K left in my stack I only had one decision, fold or reraise all-in. Because Scott only bet $6K and didn't have that sense of aggression that he is known for, I put him on AK,AQ, or a smaller pocket pair. I moved all-in for his $6K and another $4K I believe. Jim quickly called and turned over J9.
The turn and the river brought him no help and all of the sudden I was the chip leader with about 27 people left. I tightened up again, with the exception of stealing a few blinds by leveraging my big chip stack against the smaller ones.
Finally I made the final table. This was a bit different for me as I primarily play online exclusively. Nonetheless it was cool as I sat down as the chip leader. The very first hand I lost half my stack with AQ this time against Ron Lawsons (another acquaintance)'s AK. All I could think is "You dumb ass, make it all the way here as chip leader and donk it off in the first few hands" Ron was playing pretty loose that night so I thought I may have had the best hand......No Dice! By this time the blinds were frozen at $5K and $10K. The smaller stacks quickly blinded out and we were down to about 7 of us. My stack was right in the middle somewhere. With only $144k in play and 7 people at the table it came down to a total pre-flop game at this point with the exception of a few hands. Either you were pushing before the flop or you were folding. Of course the blinds were very valuable so there was a lot of attempted blind stealing going on.
There were 2 key hands that sealed my fate. The first was when I held Q9 suited in the BB and got a free look with heads up and the SB just calling. The flop came and brought me an open ended straight draw as well as a flush draw. The SB moved all-in on the flop. I had him covered, but a call would force me to lose 2/3 of my chips. The more I thought about it and all the outs I had, it seemed like it wasn't an awful call. I'm sure some may argue that but I also took into consideration that the SB may just be trying to steal. So I called and he turned over top pair. The turn brought nothing, however the river brought a 8 to complete my straight. BoooYahh, 6 players left. Unless I totally did something stupid I was almost guaranteed to be in the money (Top 5). Once again I went back to conservative mode and folded almost everything.
Ron was knocked out 6th and there I was, in the money! The next key hand came when I was in the BB again and held AQ. The SB moved all-in with a fair amount of chips. I quickly called and he showed TT. Luckily the flop brought me a Q, and I ended up winning that hand. I can't remember how the 4th guy went out, but soon it was down to 3 of us. I don't know the eventual 3rd place finisher but he is a friend of Jims and I have played with him a few times. to be quite honest, I remember him busting me up in a 5-10 game a few years back so I really wasn't too enthused to have him sitting on my right. He was the short stack at the table and went all-in almost every time I was BB. I knew he was stealing, but I couldn't justify a call with rags.
The guy on my left whose stack was a little bigger than mine at this point was also pretty aggressive. Here I was after playing so tight all night in the middle of these two guys. Several times I just folded and watched them exchange chips. I know short handed is much more aggressive, but I'm still not going to donk off all my chips with 93os. Anyways finally in my BB I caught KQ and again the SB went all-in, I quickly called and saw him turn over 25 suited. I had a sinking feeling that he was gonna fu me by catching one of those, but luckily he didn't and I won the hand.
With our stacks almost even and the payouts for 1st and 2nd pretty close, $1800/$2200, we decided to chop and each take $2k. There it is folks, not my first "live" final table but certainly my first win at the $150 Multi. The next night I hosted a freeroll at
FullTiltPoker.com with 115 players and I took 4th place. I guess you could say I'm having a good week.
